Highly recommend it!

The movie title reminded me of We Are What We Are, directed by Jim Mickle. I didn’t write this one’s review because I lost the strength to type any word recalling the superficial execution of a potential horror theme.

I thought it was like a primitive and terrifying ancient tradition passed down in a family for thousands of years, and the younger generations started resisting and refusing to follow the trials. They either killed to escape from the control or endured to perform the cruel practices.

However, in Hereditary, the whole family is oblivious to the secrets buried in their past generations, and the reclusive relationship with the grandmother leaves them unaware of any bizarre sign.

Movie Link

The movie follows a family that begins to be haunted following the death of their reclusive grandmother. When they begin to unravel dark secrets, the more they discover, the more they find themselves trying to outrun the sinister fate they seem to have inherited.

Occult

The purpose of the occult also differs from A Dark Song, in which the character finds an occultist to perform an occult for revenge on her son’s behalf. In Hereditary, no one knows that their grandmother has already decided their fates.

A deal with an evoking demon promises this family can flourish generation after generation, but every generation has to sacrifice like a curse.

Fallen Angel

From the beginning of the movie, if someone is interested in researching demonic spirits, they will immediately know what the family deals with upon seeing the necklace resting on the grandma’s chest in the coffin.

In the book The Lesser Key of Solomon, there are more detailed descriptions of one of the kings in hell. Once this demon is recognized, every aspect of the plot falls into place, including the strange behavior of the little sister (is she really a girl?), the mother’s occupation, the sacrifice, and the family conflicts.

Other scenes or sounds are only for creating the atmosphere of a horror movie. (Like the three claps in The Conjuring.)

Inevitable Fate

The director wants to emphasize that some tragedies are guaranteed to happen, and no one can do anything to prevent them from happening. Even if they delay the occurrence, the same things will still happen in some other ways.

“For the grandmother who wants to continue this worshiping occult, it is a fantastic ending to her.” The director said, “If you see it from her point of view.”

Hereditary is a movie that reflects the harsh reality that strength, kindness, and nobility do not always conquer evil. Just like in real life, miracles are scarce, and even the hardest work doesn’t always yield rewards.

We see the struggle of a family, heartbroken and frightened, trying to get together to fight back, but just like in real life, sometimes we can only face and accept it.
